Whilst you're here, we'd like to tell you about the work we did with Seavision!
Sea Vision is a national campaign to inspire young people, aged 11 to 22, to consider a career in the maritime sector.
The sector employs over 531,000 people directly and indirectly, contributing more than £26.5 billion each year to the UK economy. Research shows that few people understand how crucial the sea and the maritime sector are to our economy. Fewer still are aware of the vast array of exciting careers which range from the Navy to oil and gas, engineering, fish farming and shipbuilding, to name a few.
Sea Vision raises awareness of the career options through a combination of on and offline activities. It is guided by a partnership of industry leaders comprising Trinity House, Royal Navy, Seafarers UK, Lloyds Register and The Chamber of Shipping. HRH The Princess Royal is Sea Vision’s Patron.
Sea Vision was established as a national campaign and was starting to gain momentum, but the team was looking for innovative and creative ways to reach a wider audience. Their budget needed to work hard for them and they had a vision to educate as well as inspire an audience within a wide age range. A key challenge focused around the need to educate people about a huge and diverse range of career options.
In 2011 Sea Vision asked Coracle to create a new online portal with educational resources and free email based courses that would inspire and engage 11 to 22 year olds. They needed the portal to reflect the maritime sector in its broadest sense.
We wanted the site to encourage visitors to explore and discover so we designed the site architecture to engender a 'stumbled upon' feel; fascinating facts relating to different functions within the maritime sector appear randomly on the home page. These link to a 'Did you know?' page which encourages visitors to discover facts relating to other sectors.
We are now developing a range of course materials for delivery in 10 emails over 30 days. The first two courses are available today but a further 10 will be released over coming months. For teachers, we are also developing new educational packs, using marine examples to support the Maths and Geography curriculum.
Commenting on the learning portal, Ewen Macdonald, Director, Sea Vision said:
'Coracle have delivered an excellent framework for a highly scalable programme of work. Their knowledge of the sector, wealth of creative ideas and intuitive sense of what we needed, gave us a head start. As the project developed, the team's sharp focus on user needs and the practicalities of meeting these, was invaluable. It’s early days but levels of engagement are good and we are looking forward to expanding the resources available'
