Fly the flag for our industry

Barely a day goes by when no mention is made of the dwindling numbers of new workers entering the shipping industry.

Shipping is the lifeblood of world trade: without the collective work that we all do to keep this vital business moving, countries would have to exist on their raw materials alone. This is a critical situation and one that we can all play a part in rectifying.

In the UK, one mother recently realised the importance of giving life experience advice to school-leavers choosing a career path and set up her own not-for-profit company to offer real career advice.

Growing Ambitions is an online initiative putting careers advisers UK-wide in touch with volunteer workplace speakers they need. It doesn't require a total commitment - just one half-hour session in a school/college close to you or your business - talking about your education, training and day job. You can opt to speak near your home or workplace, or both. To take part all you need to do is go to Growing Ambitions click 'Offer to Speak' and complete the registration screen - this is a free service to speakers.

Knowledge on the move

Think the shipping industry is behind the times?

Think again!

We now have our very own podcast channel for shipping at the aptly-named www.shippingpodcasts.com website.

From here you can listen to the latest legal, currency, recruitment and tanker market market commentaries as an audio file on your computer, or download the files to your MP3 player to listen to them on the move.

You can sign up through iTunes, choose the podcasts that you’re interested in and the latest files will be downloaded to your computer or MP3 player whenever you log-in.

Now you really have no excuse to be out of touch with the latest maritime happenings!..

Soak up the atmopsphere...

...and hopefully some knowledge at the ICS UK & Ireland Zone (UKIZ) seminar in Felixstowe this month.

On July 9, a ‘Living with Port Congestion’ seminar will tackle the thorny subject of congestion at one of the country’s busiest ports.

The evening seminar is completely free to attend, but attendees must reserve a place in advance by emailing Rowena Hughes at the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce (Rowena@suffolkchamber.co.uk).

More information can be found on Argo0

This free seminar is just one in a series being organised by the UKIZ this year.

And lastly, do you know you shipping bosses?

These shipping company bosses have become industry celebrities over the years, but do you know which companies they represent or represented?
