Let’s get engaged!
How important is engagement?
When the word is used in the context of a coupling of people, it is layered with joy, hope and a sense of optimism.
When the word is used in the context of management speak, it's layered with cynicism and a sense of bureaucratic top-down instruction, as opposed to a partnership between people.
Successful learning requires engagement, but when the learning is conducted online, the engagement must be driven by the learner, as opposed to offline tuition where the teacher can lead the way. If we're going to put the pressure on the learner to engage then it is important that we make that process as simple and fulfilling as possible.
There are a wide range of options available. I particularly love the offering from the eLearning Guild 68 Tips for eLearning Engagement and Interactivity
68! Wow! That’s a lot. Unfortunately my engagement didn’t stand the test of patience to get through that many...
What is the most effective engagement technique?
In our opinion, one of the best approaches available is to personalise the experience by assessing a user at the start of a programme and then helping them through the available content based on their requirements. Learning isn’t a one-size fits all experience and software can be used to help deliver appropriate and timely activities in this respect.
The user experience on a learning journey is important and our role is to help make that as simple, intuitive and informative as possible. We have a number of tips (maybe not 68 though) up our sleeves and we’d love the chance to talk about them with you.
In the meantime, this TEDx Talk is an inspirational look at delivery.
